Abstract

[The essay is a revision and extension of essay no. 5 (“The Relevance of Mediality and Intermediality to Academic Studies of English Literature”). In its first part it emphasizes the relevance of intermediality for literary studies as a notion that covers a variety of phenomena, including basic ones encountered today in most paperback editions of novels such as the relationship between text and cover illustration. The next section is dedicated to the clarification of the leading concepts of intermediality studies (‘medium’ and ‘intermediality’), after which a typology of general intermedial forms including both extra- and intracompositional variants (as already presented in some outlines in essay no. 3 [“Intermedialität ...”]) is elaborated on and illustrated by examples from literature and the visual arts. In the last section the focus on typological classification is transcended by a short discussion of frequent functions of intermediality and research perspectives of intermediality (studies) as well as by an alternative focus, namely intermediality as a process (e.g. of ‘remediation’).]
