This book emerges from the international workshop “Sufism East and West: Mystical Islam and Cross-Cultural Exchange between the West and the Muslim World” held in the memory of Professor Annemarie Schimmel (1922–2003), in April 2016 at her birthplace, Erfurt. The volume consists of a selection of papers presented at the conference and revised thereafter. The editors would like to thank the German Research Foundation (DFG) for their generous grant which allowed the workshop to take place, and the University of Erfurt for hosting it. The event was augmented by an exhibition entitled “Bridges between East and West” which showcased a number of significant items from Annemarie Schimmel’s academic estate. We are also indebted to Bruce B. Lawrence for his support and advice. Michael Asbury and Yousra Ibrahim did an excellent job in editing the chapters and preparing the manuscript. Thanks also go to Brill’s editing staff in Leiden who have been a valuable source of encouragement and advice while preparing this volume for publication in the series Studies on Sufism. Finally, and most importantly, thanks go to the contributors for providing this endeavor with various vistas onto Sufism and its interaction and entanglement with and in the West as well as for their enduring our wishes and being attentive to the general framework of the volume.
