Prologue

Daniel Zohary, or Danny, as he was called by all, Professor Emeritus of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, was born in Jerusalem, Israel, on 28 April, 1926. Danny married Devora in 1949, and they had three children: Tamar, the ecologist, Rutie, the artist and Ehud, the neurophysiologist. Danny had six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Devora died of cancer in 1976. A few years later Danny married Lilly with whom he lived in Jerusalem for more than 35 years. The entire family celebrated his 90th birthday on 28 April 2016.
