Abstract

Transparency has become a buzzword in the analysis of food chains. This paper analyzes the transparency of food chains from an organizational point of view by referring to the concept of interdependencies. It is argued that a lack of transparency can be rooted in the number and the coordination requirements of inter-company process interdependencies, which on their part result from the division of labor in food chains. Empirical evidence is taken from the German meat industry. The paper suggests some organizational solutions for improving transparency in netchains.
