The Qurʾān You Don’t Expect: An Overview of the Multifarious Forms of a Well-Known Text
A special issue of the Journal of Islamic Manuscripts (JIM) will be dedicated to the unexpected outcomes of the Quranic manuscript and material production and its textual excerpts. We welcome contributions that examine unusual features of Quranic manuscripts—or early printed volumes—as well as textual Quranic excerpts in under-studied surfaces. The goal is to document the multifarious aspects of the Quranic production and investigate the geographical, chronological, religious, linguistic and sociocultural contexts in which these unusual manuscript shapes and material uses—on the edge of what can be considered a familiar and somewhat normative text and book-form production—were rooted and made sense.
This special issue therefore aims to cover, discover, illustrate and analyse the contexts of production of what goes beyond the well-known form of the Quranic codices. These range from Quranic scrolls to illustrated Quranic manuscripts and prints, from Quranic cipher texts to Qurans in exceptional formats (large or small), from Qurans written on watermarked paper bearing Christian symbols to Qurans with translations, from relic Qurans to forged Quranic manuscripts (for example, falsely attributed to famous people), from xylograph Qurans to epigraphic Qurans, notably on textiles and coins. The issue aims to include a wide range of nuances in which the sacred text of Islam appears in manuscript or written form, with the aim of contributing to the study of the Quran as a living text.

Le Qurʾān inattendu : un aperçu des formes multiples d’un texte bien connu
Un numéro spécial du Journal of Islamic Manuscripts (JIM) sera consacré aux aspects inattendus de la production manuscrite et matérielle du Coran et à ses citations textuelles. Nous accueillerons les contributions qui examinent les caractéristiques inhabituelles des manuscrits coraniques – ou des premiers corans imprimés – ainsi que les extraits textuels du Coran sur des surfaces sous-étudiées. L’objectif est de documenter les multiples facettes de la production coranique et d’étudier les contextes géographiques, chronologiques, religieux, linguistiques et socioculturels dans lesquels ces formes inhabituelles de manuscrits et d’usages matériels – à la limite de ce qui peut être considéré comme une production familière et quelque peu normative de textes et de formes de livres – étaient enracinées et faisaient sens.
Ce numéro spécial vise donc à couvrir, découvrir, illustrer et analyser les contextes de production de ce qui dépasse la forme bien connue des codex du Coran. Cela va des rouleaux coraniques aux manuscrits et imprimés coraniques illustrés, des textes coraniques chiffrés, des corans dans un format exceptionnel (grand ou petit), des corans écrits sur du papier filigrané portant des symboles chrétiens aux corans dotés de traductions, aux corans reliques, aux faux manuscrits coraniques (par exemple, faussement attribués à des personnages célèbres), des corans xylographiés au Coran épigraphique, notamment sur des textiles et des monnaies. Le numéro a pour but d’inclure un large éventail de nuances dans lesquelles le texte sacré de l’Islam apparaît sous forme manuscrite ou écrite, dans le but de contribuer à l’étude du Coran en tant que texte vécu.
