<title> SUMMARY </title>Lorenzo della Volpaia ranks among the most important clockmakers of the early Renaissance. He made in Florence two planetary clocks of revolutionary design, the first in 1484, the second, which was his masterpiece, in 1510. Both have disappeared. The notebooks of two sons and of a grandson of Lorenzo contain a wealth of data and information about his masterpiece. They have made possible the faithful and working reconstruction of the movement and of all the astronomical components of the original clock.
